Panthers enter final week of regular season in the hunt for first place

SACKVILLE, N.B. — Summerside native Taylor Gillis scored twice to lead the UPEI Panthers to an important 5-1 road win over the Mount Allison Mounties on Sunday afternoon.
The win allows the Panthers to enter the final week of the 2019-20 regular season in the hunt for first place in the Atlantic University Sport Women’s Hockey Conference.
The third-place Panthers improved to 19-6-1 (won-lost-overtime losses) and trail the Saint Mary’s Huskies (20-5-1) and St. Francis Xavier X-Women (20-5-1) by two points atop the eight-team league standings. All teams have two regular-season games remaining.
In Sackville, N.B., Jolena Gillard (1-1), Ally Clements and Caroline Daoust rounded out the Panthers’ scoring. Emma Schurman netted Mount Allison’s lone tally.
UPEI built period leads of 3-0 and 4-0.
Camille Scherger earned the goaltending win.

Two home games
The Panthers will close out the regular season on home ice at MacLauchlan Arena in Charlottetown this weekend. The Huskies visit for a 7 p.m. start on Friday and the St. Thomas Tommies provide the opposition for a 3 p.m. start on Sunday.
Saint Mary’s final game is at UNB (17-9-0) on Saturday. The X-Women are at Dalhousie (6-18-2) on Wednesday at home to Mount Allison (3-21-2) on Friday.
