ABRAM-VILLAGE, P.E.I. — ABRAM-VILLAGE – Stephanie Arsenault was thrilled to share the spotlight with a longtime volleyball teammate.

Arsenault was named Evangeline School’s 2018-19 senior female athlete of the year while seniors Katelyn Milligan and Christian Gallant were introduced as the senior students of the year. The presentations took place during Evangeline School’s annual awards ceremony Thursday afternoon.
“Katelyn and I were part of the volleyball team all throughout high school and I’m glad we were able to get these awards together,” said Arsenault, who co-captained the team with Milligan that competed in the P.E.I. School Athletic Association Senior A Girls Volleyball League in the fall.
Grade 11 student Chad Arsenault, who wore the Evangeline Coyotes’ colours in PEISAA senior badminton, ball hockey and track and field, where he competed in the 3,000 metres, was announced as the senior male athlete of the year.
“I was surprised (to receive the award),” he said. “I wasn’t fortunate to participate in all the sports with being busy with hockey, but it’s an honour and it means a lot.
“I dedicate a lot of my time to sports and to see it pay off is nice.”
Chad, who starred as a goaltender with the Kensington Wild major midget hockey team during the 2018-19 season, is a highly-touted prospect. He is a 2018 draft pick of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Charlottetown Islanders and the Valley Wildcats of the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League).
“Chad is in a league of his own,” said Evangeline School athletic director Jason Arsenault. “He is the epitome of the definition of what an athlete is.
“He knows what he has to eat. He knows when he has to sleep. He knows when he has to train and he knows what he needs to do to get the job done.
“He does not back away from a challenge, but yet he has this uncanny ability to not stress over it. He stays cool, calm and collected and he just keeps moving forward.”
Chad, who previously played school soccer, was recognized as Evangeline’s best defensive player in ball hockey.
“I don’t know what I’d do without sports,” said Chad, the 17-year-old son of Raymond and Susan Arsenault of St. Raphael. “My life is based around sports.”

Also surprised
Like Chad, Stephanie was also “surprised” to hear her name announced as top female athlete.
“I have never got an award like this before,” said Stephanie, a Grade 12 student. “I’m happy I got it for my last year.”
She was a key member of Evangeline School’s fall and spring volleyball teams.
Stephanie, who will study bachelor of French at UPEI with a goal to become an intermediate school teacher, was named co-most valuable player (MVP) with Julie MacDonald for the Coyotes during the PEISAA senior A girls’ season. She also was selected an all-star for spring volleyball and nominated for an all-star award last fall.

“Stephanie has been involved in our school athletic program since Grade 7 and ever since Grade 7 she has made an impact,” said the school’s athletic director. “Coaches from other teams have approached me asking about her, refs have told me over the years how her technique is good for her age and she has progressed all through these years. She is an exceptional athlete in everything she does.”
The 18-year-old daughter of Michelle and Donald Arsenault of Abram-Village says she will remember her time at Evangeline School fondly.
“There are so many memories,” Stephanie said. “It’s going to be nice to look back on that.”
