CINDY DAY: Superheroes come in all sizes on Halloween

Halloween takes on a new meaning as you get older; some people don’t care for it. Perhaps we could learn from the generous souls in Dildo, N.L. Last weekend, a haunting was put together by The Dildo Recreation Committee. Marilyn Crotty says many people took part in the hike around the brook called Jack Sprat's Brook. The money raised will go to more improvements in the brook area. Crotty thanks the “awesome group of volunteers.”

Happy Halloween! It’s finally here…and it’s going to rain.

That’s so disappointing but it could be worse. The rain is not expected to be heavy; in some places, it will stop during the supper hour and it is going to be unseasonably mild. If you don’t mind getting a little damp, you might not have to bother with a coat. After all, who wants to cover up a lovely costume?

I’ll never forget the Halloween of 1972. As soon as the candy hit the store shelves, my sister Monique and I had our costumes picked out. I can’t remember ever buying a costume but we had a couple of old trunks in the attic filled with clothes and accessories and that’s usually where the inspiration came from. A scary witch and a lovely princess it would be!

The day before Halloween, an early season snowstorm swept across Eastern Ontario. Monique and I were devastated - not only was it white but very cold, too! How could we go trick-or-treating? We couldn’t put a coat on over our costumes …what was the point? Mom could see how upset we were and immediately sprang into action. My very clever mother got out our snowsuits, cut some large patches of fabric and sewed them onto the suit. She then stuffed a long tail, made ears and attached them to the snowsuit, et voila! We were the warmest cats in Glengarry County.

I have many fond memories of Halloween on the farm. Some years I wished we lived in the city where my friends would brag about filling pillowcases with candy. Halloween wasn’t quite that lucrative in the country; there were very few homes, long lanes and big dogs. When we were younger, mom would drive us around after chores, usually to about a half dozen homes. As we got older, we walked the length of the concession road then headed home. That was just enough because we knew the people and they knew us, and it was lovely.

I wish everyone a happy, safe Halloween filled with moments you will recall many years down the road. If you’re still fortunate enough to have your mom, give her a call and thank her for the memories.
