We're caught up in a cool breeze and a dry slot that stretches northward from a fair-weather system off the Carolina coast.

As the sunshine-maker sinks southward, a developing area of low pressure currently over the state of Illinois will track off the eastern seaboard and head for our coastlines. The centre of the storm is expected to stay offshore, but the backside of the system will come very close – brushing Nova Scotia's Atlantic coast on its way to the Avalon.

Snowfall totals could be as high as 10 cm for eastern Nova Scotia Saturday night with the potential for 15 cm or more for much of Newfoundland on Sunday.

Areas away from the coasts will hang on to some weekend sunshine, but a cool north wind wrapping around the snowmaker will certainly put a chill in the air.

A wind direction change will bring milder temperatures and some rain early next week.
