September truly is a month of transition. Many of us faced frosty windshields earlier this week but by Sunday, we’ll be heading to the beach.
The temperature swing is the result of the position of a cold high-pressure system and its inability to cross the region. We’ve been on the cooler side of that area of high pressure for a few days.
On Saturday, as the remnants of Humberto skirt south of Sable Island – then well south of the Avalon – the centre of the fair-weather system will make its move, allowing the wind to shift from the north to the southwest. While many were not ready for the early taste of fall, we should be reminded that if not for the cold air at the centre of the high to the west of us, Humberto’s track might have looked very different.
