Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada left Wednesday's game in Boston soon after being hit in the right knee with a pitch from Red Sox starter Chris Sale.

Sale's 1-2 slider sailed inside and struck Moncada with no outs in the first inning. Trainers attended to Moncada, but he stayed in the game for the next batter, Jose Abreu, who doubled into the right field corner.

Moncada labored into third base and then exited the game.

The White Sox announced the 24-year-old had suffered a contusion and is considered day-to-day.

Moncada, who joined Chicago in the December 2016 trade that sent Sale to Boston, is having his best season at the plate, hitting .299 with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs in 72 games.

Chicago lost shortstop Tim Anderson to a high ankle sprain in Tuesday's game, with more tests Wednesday to help determine the extent of the injury. Leury Garcia moved from center field to start at shortstop and hit leadoff on Wednesday.

A trip to the injured list is expected for Anderson, who is hitting .317 with 11 home runs and 15 stolen bases in 271 at-bats.
