They defeated the Mosquito AA Summerside #1 team, coached by Jonny MacNeill, in the championship game with a 6-3 victory at the Upper MacNeil Field in Stratford on Sept. 10.

It was a fitting end to a successful 2017 baseball season, which saw the Mariners finish with a 29-2 record, including regular season games and tournaments.

Members of the Western Baseball Association, the team consists of players from the Alberton and Tignish areas.

As provincial champs the Western team will now be representing P.E.I. at Baseball Atlantic 11U Championships this weekend, Sept. 15 to 17, hosted by Tri-County Rangers in Windsor Junction, N.S.

The Mariners’ first contest will be against the New Brunswick team at 2 p.m. Friday and play Newfoundland and Nova Scotia on Saturday. They will take on the host Tri-County team on Sunday morning.

Gary Rozell, coach of the Western Mariners Mosquito AA team, is looking forward to seeing his team compete with the best in the Atlantic provinces and appreciates the support the team has received.

“I would like to thank all the businesses who supported us financially, allowing us to attend the Atlantics,” he said.
