CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — It was over early.
The UPEI Panthers jumped out to a 21-3 lead en route to a 61-39 victory over the St. FX X-Women Saturday to complete the weekend sweep in Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball.
Jenna Mae Ellsworth led the Panthers with 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Carolina Del Santo had a team-high nine rebounds and two blocks. UPEI wore pink jerseys during its annual shoot for the cure game in support of breast cancer research.
Marley Bonnick came off the bench to score a team-high 21 points for the X-Women. Karina Sarai led the team with 10 rebounds.
The Panthers held 21-7, 36-21 and 47-27 quarter leads. UPEI held a 33-32 per cent shooting advantage from the field. The home side shot better from behind the three-point line (21-8 per cent) and scored 10 more points from the free-throw line, going 14-for-23 while St. FX went 4-for-8.
UPEI improved to 11-2 while St. FX are 2-11. The Panthers head to Fredericton, N.B., Saturday for a four-point game at UNB (7-7).
