UPDATED: MacFadyen, Lenentine still undefeated

P.E.I. men’s junior championship could conclude Friday evening

O’LEARY – The Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox in Summerside, and Lauren Lenentine’s defending-champion women’s rink from the Cornwall Curling Club are still undefeated after two days of play at the 2018 Pepsi P.E.I. junior curling championships.
The competition for curlers under 21 years of age will decide the Prince Edward Island representatives for the New Holland Canadian curling championships in Shawinigan, Que., from Jan. 21 to 28.
MacFadyen and his rink of James Dalton, Leslie Noye and Parker MacFadyen, moved to 3-0 (won-lost) in the modified triple knockout men’s championship with a 9-4 win over Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut in the B final Thursday evening at the Maple Leaf Curling Club. He stole three in the eighth end to trigger the handshakes.
That win puts MacFadyen directly into the C event final in Friday’s 6:30 p.m. draw, where a victory would book his team’s tickets to Shawinigan.
Meanwhile, Lenentime, whose team consists of Kristie Rogers, Breanne Burgoyne and Rachel O’Connor, boosted her record to 4-0 in the six-team women’s championship with a 9-3 win over Rachel MacLean in Thursday evening’s draw. That victory advances her to Friday’s 9:30 a.m. women’s B final against Lauren Ferguson, whose Charlottetown/Cornwall/Crapaud rink won its Thursday evening game 11-3 over Charlottetown’s Annika Kelly, sealing the deal with a five-ender in the sixth. Rounding out the Ferguson rink are Katie Shaw, Alexis Burris and Lexie Murray.
MacFadyen, who also won the A final over Mitchell Schut 7-3 on Thursday morning, awaits the winner of Friday’s 9:30 a.m. men’s C semifinal, which will be between Mitchell Schut and Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan. MacMillan kept his hopes alive with a 9-3 win over Devin Schut, Mitchell’s older brother, on Thursday evening. That loss eliminated Devin Schut.
Compared to four men’s teams starting out, the women’s championship requires more games to decide a winner, and all six teams remain in contention. That changes with Friday’s 9:30 a.m. draw, where the losers of the Sydney Howatt (Cornwall) versus Rachel MacLean (Cornwall) and Emily Sanderson (Cornwall) against Annika Kelly (Charlottetown) C quarter-finals will be eliminated.
The winners of those games, however, will advance against Ferguson and Lenentine in the C semifinals on Friday at 2 p.m.
