TRNAVA, Slovakia – It’s not the colour she wants, but Hannah Taylor has an opportunity to win a medal at the world junior wrestling championships.
Taylor, a graduate of Three Oaks Senior High School in Summerside, won her opening match in the women’s 57-kilogram class on Thursday morning, but then lost to a Japanese wrestler in the quarter-final. The world championships feature a single-elimination format.
Taylor, who entered with high expectations, was obviously disappointed to be knocked out of gold-medal contention.
“Not the outcome I wanted of course,” Taylor posted on Twitter. “But remaining positive and hoping to get pulled back in to repechage.”

Taylor, who is a member of the Brock University wrestling team in St. Catharines, Ont., received the news she was hoping to hear later in the day, and will meet Serena Boelke of Germany on Friday. The winner of this match will wrestle for the bronze medal.
Taylor’s teammate, Jayd David, who is competing in 53 kilograms, had the exact same fate. She won her first match, lost in the quarter-finals and will face Alicja Czyzowicz of Poland on Friday through repechage, with the winner advancing to the bronze-medal match.
