WINSLOE – The Summerside United Soccer Club’s (SUSC) under-13 girls’ First Division team returned home with a silver medal from a tournament in the Winsloe/Charlottetown FC soccer tournament over the weekend.
The United, who completed play with an overall record of 3-2 (won-lost), dropped a close 1-0 decision to Fundy Soccer in the championship game on Sunday afternoon.
“The gold-medal game came down to two teams with similar styles, both controlling the ball well, using lots of communication and playing a well-structured game,” said United coach Jeff Brant. “In the end, Fundy Soccer needed a perfect shot to beat us, putting the ball in the top-hand corner off of a free kick.
“We pressed hard to the end, hitting the post with five minutes remaining. We are all proud of how our girls played, and they were great ambassadors of the SUSC.”

Semifinal
The United punched their ticket to the final with a 3-1 win over the host Winsloe/Charlottetown Royals in the semifinals. Jealynn Oatway scored twice while Sydney Cameron added a goal to account for Summerside’s offence.
In the round robin, the United opened play with an 8-0 victory over Sherwood, and followed that up with a 4-2 decision versus Fundy Youth Soccer. Eliot River edged the United 1-0 in Summerside’s third game.
“The girls had a great tournament, putting in a great team effort in every game,” said Brant. “The girls moved the ball well, and dominated possession through the round-robin games, coming up short only once.”
