Posts first-round submission victory in Peterborough, Ont.

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. – A local mixed martial arts (MMA) athlete has returned home with a championship trophy and belt.

Toronto native Jason Saggo, who operates the Summerside Martial Arts Academy, won the Burlington Training Centre lightweight championship on a professional MMA card held in Peterborough, Ont., on Saturday night.

Saggo executed a rear naked choke hold with seven seconds remaining in the first round to defeat Adam Assenza of Burlington, Ont., by submission.

Saggo, who has a 3-3 (won-lost) record in UFC matches, improved his career mark to 13-4. That resumé also includes 11 stoppages.

Along with the championship belt, Saggo was also presented with a trophy standing five feet tall.
