Cornwall’s Jordan Spence and his Team Canada teammates are into the final four at the world under-18 hockey championship in Sweden.
Canada beat Latvia 3-1 in Thursday’s quarter-final to advance to one of Saturday’s semifinals. They are slated for 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Atlantic but it was not known after Thursday's game which one Canada would play in.
Peyton Krebs scored twice, including an empty-net goal, Thursday for Canada while Braden Schneider opened the scoring. Taylor Gauthier made 36 saves for the win.
Canada held 1-0 and 2-0 period leads.
Spence, a five-foot-10, 163-pound blue-liner, has a goal and two assists in six games at the tournament. He was named the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s rookie of the year after recording 43 assists and 49 points in 68 games.
The 18-year-old is eligible for the NHL draft in June.
He played for the Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals in 2017-18 and the Charlottetown Bulk Carriers Pride major midgets in 2016-17.
Canada went 4-0 in the preliminary round to finish atop the Group A standings.
