Gray boys earn medal in penalty kicks
CORNWALL – The Westisle Wolverines returned home with a medal from the P.E.I. School Athletic Association Senior AAA Girls Soccer League playoff championship.
The Wolverines blanked the Colonel Gray Colonels 3-0 in a defensive-minded bronze-medal game at the Terry Fox Sports Complex on Saturday.
Third-seeded Westisle opened the scoring in the 45th minute as fifth-seeded Gray deflected the ball into its own net. Megan Kinch converted on an opportunity 13 minutes into the second half to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead, and Gray’s unfortunate luck continued with another own goal in the 90th minute.
In the boys’ senior AAA bronze-medal contest, second-seeded Colonel Gray edged the Bluefield Bobcats in penalty kicks after regulation time ended 2-2.
Sam Akinsolo scored in the 34th and 48 minutes to give the Colonels a 2-0 lead, but the fourth-seeded Bobcats stormed back as Zach Wilson made it a one-goal game just two minutes later. Wilson would tie the game with only five minutes left in regulation time.
At the break between regulation time and overtime, the coaches agreed to go straight to penalty kicks, which proved to favour the Colonels. Gray’s kickers were very accurate and did not miss, and keeper Luke Clark was spectacular in making two saves to clinch the bronze medal.
