The Three Oaks Axewomen midfielder said she was hoping her team would face the Charlottetown Rural Raiders in P.E.I. School Athletic Association Senior AAA Girls Soccer League championship game on Saturday. That match will be played at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall, with a scheduled start time of 4 p.m.
The Axewomen punched their ticket to the final with a 4-0 semifinal win over the Westisle Wolverines on Wednesday. Rural defeated the Colonel Gray Colonels 2-1 in the other semifinal.
“Rural was our first game of the season, so we weren’t really ready, so I’d like to see them again in the final so we can have another shot at them,” said Arsenault, before learning the outcome of the Raiders-Colonels’ semifinal game.
Arsenault added Three Oaks will have their work cut out for them against a strong Raiders’ team.
The gold-medal game will be a rematch of last year’s final – a contest Rural prevailed in 3-2. There also is a rematch of Westisle and Colonel Gray in the bronze-medal game. Westisle defeated Gray 2-0 a year ago.
The bronze medal game, between the losing teams in this year’s semi-finals, will also be a rematch. Last year Westisle won bronze 2-0 over Colonel Gray.
The Raiders finished on top of the regular season standings with 11 points – three wins and five ties – in eight games. Three Oaks and Westisle were next with eight points, but the Wolverines took second because of its regular-season win over the Axewomen.
Colonel Gray finished fifth, but downed fourth-place Bluefield 4-2 in the quarter-finals to advance to the semifinals.
