Island figure skaters bring home medals from recent Nova Scotia event

CHARLOTTETOWN - P.E.I. figure skaters returned home from the recent Robert McCall memorial competition in East Hants, N.S., with eight medals including two gold.

Summerside’s Kaitlyn Smith in the pre-juvenile women’s under-13 division and Ella Hennessey of the Charlottetown Skating Club in the Star 4 over-13 division earned the gold medals.

Silver medals went to Katie Stavert-Bernard of the Kensington Area Skating Club in the Star 7 women’s short program and in the juvenile under-14 women’s category. Jessica Thibeau of Kensington in Star 4 under-13 girls and Summerside’s Gabrielle Samson in Star 5 over-13 women also had silvers.

In the Star 6 women’s division, Marilyn Sheen of Kensington captured the bronze as did Charlottetown’s Julia Dunn in the Star 10 women’s class.

Other Island competitors included Renee Gardiner (fourth, Star 4 over-13 girls), Jaiden Nelson (sixth, Star 4 under-13 girls), Alexandra MacCaull (sixth, Star 5 under-13 women), Julie Davison (eighth), Julia Smith (10th) and Paige Lauwerijssen (11th) in Star 5 over-13 women, Laura Davison (9th, Star 6 women), Keira Dougay (eighth, juvenile under-14 women), and Emma Hynes (seventh overall) and Kaylynne Vessey (18th overall) in pre-novice women.
