The Ottawa Senators have signed Colin White to a six-year, $28.75-million extension, a promising sign for a club that has pledged to build for the future.

White, who had been a restricted free agent, established himself as a solid full-time NHL player last season, scoring 14 goals and 27 assists in 71 games last season.

In 94 career games, he has scored 16 goals and 31 assists.

White, 22, was originally drafted in the first round (21 st overall) of the 2015 NHL entry draft.

“We’ve identified Colin as one of our core young players who will help drive our team’s success in both the short and long-term,” Senators general manager Pierre Dorion said in a statement. “Colin plays the 200-foot game that is so coveted in today’s NHL. He can skate, play on special teams and is a character player who loves hockey and this city.”

The contract will pay White $4 million in each of the next two seasons, $4.75 million during the 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons and $6.25 million in 2024-25.
