MORELL, P.E.I. — The Brian McGuire Memorial Golf Tournament (The Onion), a charity event in support of palliative and hospice care across P.E.I., is now accepting registrations from returning teams.

The 11th annual Onion tourney scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10, at the Links at Crowbush Cove, is held in memory of Brian McGuire of Morell who died of cancer while in home palliative/hospice care in 2007.

Title tourney sponsors are P.E.I. Mussel King and Atlantic Shellfish with headquarters at Red Head Harbour in Morell.

The charity event, which launched in 2009, raised a record $70,700 last August, pushing its 10-year total to more than $357,000. Last October, two cheques of $35,350 were presented to Nancymarie Arsenault, executive director of Hospice P.E.I., and Peter Howatt, manager of the Palliative Care Centre. Funds raised provide essential services, dignity, and comfort to many Islanders during the last days of their cancer journey.

Teams can register on the tourney’s website at oniongolf.ca and make payment via e-transfer to [email protected].

Teams or individuals interested in playing, or sponsors wishing to support the tourney, can email inquiries to contacts found on the website. Donations to the Onion are fully tax deductible and receipted through Hospice P.E.I.

While the tourney has enjoyed the support of a full field of 36 teams every year, there is usually an annual turnover of several teams. New teams are welcome to register and the tourney will give out any available spots on a first come, first serve basis.

In 2016, the Brian McGuire Family Room was dedicated at the new Provincial Palliative Care Centre. The room offers a resource for family and friends of people on their cancer journey and recognizes the legacy of Brian McGuire and the support of the Onion tourney. Volunteers are now selling tickets on a Father’s Day lobster draw in support of the Onion. The draw takes place Friday, June 14.
