With school well underway and minor sports seasons about to begin across the island, the Cape Breton Post is once again planning to provide coverage of minor hockey, basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball and more.

The paper devotes plenty of coverage to the elite level teams across the island, but we would like to have more local minor sports coverage in the Post.

But we need your help.

Unfortunately, we can't be at every sporting event happening in Cape Breton. We wish we could — it's physically impossible — but that doesn't mean your son or daughter's team can't be in the Post.

In previous years, we've published local minor sports team scores in our local scoreboard section, something we would like to continue to do.

To have your scores published in the Post, please email the scorers, where the game was played and the date to [email protected]. Scores emailed after 3 p.m. during the week will not make the next day's print edition, but will be published online. The deadline for weekend scores for Monday's edition is Sunday at 12 p.m.

Not only are we looking for scores, teams are also encouraged to send standalone photos of tournament wins as well as notices as to when they're participating in events. To have photos published, please send your submission along with the names of player, identified left-to-right, to [email protected].

In previous years, we've published local minor sports team scores in our local scoreboard section, something we would like to continue to do.

Leagues are also encouraged to send standings to the newspaper. In the local scoreboard, standings are published weekly. Depending on the amount we receive from minor sports teams, we could publish a separate standings list for teams.

The Post is always seeking interesting stories from our local sports teams. Is there a player, coach or volunteer who has a story you think our readers should know about? Don't hesitate to email [email protected]. It could very well be a story we will share with the community.

On another topic, last week's Sports Chat column talked about the Cape Breton Eagles possible retiring another player's number and Howie Centre's Chris Culligan was mentioned as a candidate to have his No. 7 retired.

There was quite a bit of reader feedback from the column, which is exactly what was hoped. It sparked lots of conversation, which is one of the goals for Sports Chat.

There were mixed opinions — some agreed Culligan should have his number retired, while many believe the late Trevor Ettinger's No. 36 should be retired, and rightly so. Another reader suggested no numbers should be retired.

As mentioned in the column, there are many former Eagles players who deserve consideration for having their number retired. Surely there will be more conversation around possible retired numbers in the future.
