Second line powers Cape Breton Eagles past Drakkar

BAIE-COMEAU, Que. — Cape Breton used its second line - on the lineup sheet - to power the offense as the Eagles downed the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 7-2 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action at Centre Henry-Leonard in Baie-Comeau on Friday.

The line of Egor Sokolov, Ryan Francis and Shawn Boudrias combined for 12 points in the game, helping Cape Breton improve its record to 5-1-0-0 on the season in front 1,469 fans.

Boudrias had three goals and two assists, while Francis recorded a goal and four assists. Sokolov finished the night with two goals.

Defenceman Jarrett Baker rounded out the team's scoring, netting his third goal of the season.

Charles-Antoine Giguère and Julien Létourneau relied with goals for the Drakkar (2-3-1-0).

Kevin Mandolese, who returned to the team's lineup after missing two games with an upper-body injury, turned aside 22 of 24 shots for Cape Breton.

Dakota Lund-Cornish allowed three goals on seven shots for the Drakkar, before being replaced by Lucas Fitzpatrick, who stopped 19 of 23 shots in his 49:38 of relief. Lund-Cornish was tagged with the loss.

Cape Breton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period with Baker finding the back of the net at 6:07, which was followed shortly after by goals from Sokolov and Boudrias.

The Eagles added to their lead in the second frame with Boudrias scoring his second goal of the game, before Giguère pulled the Drakkar to within three with a power play marker at 7:19. Sokolov regained the four-goal lead with his second of the night, but Létourneau would notch his first goal of the year on the power play to make it a 5-2 game.

Cape Breton would extend its lead, scoring two more goals in the third period with Francis recording his second goal of the season and Bourdrias completing the hat trick with his third goal of the contest on the power play late in the period.

Cape Breton outshot Baie-Comeau 30-24 in the game, while going 1-for-3 on the power play. The Drakkar went 2-for-6 with the man-advantage.

The Eagles will wrap up their three-game Quebec road trip on Saturday when they take on the Chicoutimi Saguenéens (4-0-1-0). Game time is 5 p.m. AST at the Centre Georges-Vézina.
