ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — When Rogers Hometown Hockey rolls into St. John’s later this month, the jam-packed schedule will feature meet-and-greets with former big-leaguers, live entertainment, and a live NHL broadcast with some special Newfoundland guests.
The two-day festival starts Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Dominion Memorial Market near Quidi Vidi Lake, where hockey fans can meet NHL All-Star MVP and former St. John’s IceCap John Scott, interact with Stanley Cup champion and Newfoundland-native Daniel Cleary on the Scotiabank community hockey rink, partake in a shooting accuracy competition, and take in the Steve Goodtime Rock Hockey Show and a number of sponsored activities.
On Day 2, the festival kicks off at 1 p.m. at Dominion and hits a fever pitch in the evening with a pre-game show featuring Scott; Newfoundland NHL alumni Adam Pardy and Ryane Clowe; and Abby and Alex Newhook, the brother-sister duo from St. John’s. Alex, 18, is a first-round 2019 draft pick of the Colorado Avalanche who is his first year of NCAA Division 1 play at Boston College, the same school where Abby, 15, has committed to play upon graduation. Newfoundlander Tom Power, host of CBC Radio’s q, will also be part of the show.
During the broadcast of the Edmonton Oilers vs. Winnipeg Jets contest, the hometown hero segment will include a segment on the ECHL champion Newfoundland Growlers, a look at Hometown Hockey co-host Tara Slone’s guest appearance on the St. John’s-shot CityTV program Hudson & Rex, and some reflection from Newfoundland musician and actor Alan Doyle.
The tour last stopped in St. John's in 2014, its inaugural year.
