SYDNEY, N.S. — A Cape Breton hockey player has elected to leave his Quebec Major Junior Hockey League team.
Leon Denny of Eskasoni recently left the Shawinigan Cataractes. The move comes after the 20-year-old was scratched by head coach Ron Choules for the team's games against Rimouski and Chicoutmi last weekend.
In an interview with Steve Turcotte of Le Nouvelliste newspaper in Trois-Rivieres, Cataractes general manager Martin Mondou said Denny requested a trade from the team early in the summer, however, the club was unable to complete a transaction prior to the start of the season.
Once a second-round draft pick of the Cape Breton Eagles, Denny was traded to Shawinigan by Cape Breton in September 2017.
In four seasons in the QMJHL with the Cataractes, the defenceman recorded 16 goals and 72 points in 189 games.
Mondou told Turcotte the Cataractes will try to trade Denny, however, if that doesn't happen he will play junior 'A' hockey this season.
