KITCHENER, Ont. — The St. Johns Edge kept extending the game, hitting buzzer-beating three-pointers to tie the score at the end of regulation and the end of the first overtime, then got some clutch rebounding, especially from Montay Brandon, late in the second OT stanza, en route to a thrilling 122-120 win over the Sudbury Five in National Basketball League of Canada action Wednesday night in Sudbury, Ont.
It means the Edge (9-6) have won nine of their last 11 games, including the first three outings of their current Ontario road trip.
The first big trey Wednesday came in the last second of the fourth quarter, when Edge captain Junior Cadougan’s long-range shot tied the score 98-98. That sent the teams into a five-minute overtime, which ended with Ahmad Thomas of St. John’s hitting a three-pointer to make it 111-111 and send the contest into another extra frame.
The Five led 120-16 with less than a minute and a half remaining in the second overtime, but the Edge got a layup basket from Karrington Ward, who was fouled on the play. Ward missed the resulting free throw, but Brandon grabbed the rebound to retain possession for St. John’s. Coron Williams’ ensuing three-point shot didn’t go, but the Edge got another board, this time from Tyrone Watson, who was fouled on the play.

Watson missed both free throws, but Brandon did his thing once more with another offensive rebound and seconds later, Watson was again fouled. But this time he made both shots from the charity stripe to tie the score at 120-120
Sudbury’s Braylon Rayson looked to put the home side in front with a three-point attempt, but missed and once again, Brandon was there for the rebound.
Fifteen seconds later, Williams made a layup to put St. John’s in front. The Five had a chance to tie the game and force a third overtime, but Josiah Moore missed a layup and, as you would guess, the Edge came away the ball, with Thomas grabbing the rebound.
Watson, who led St. John’s in both points (21) and rebounds (17), was one of his three St. John’s players with double-doubles on the night, joining Ward (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Brandon (18 points, 16 rebounds), who is now the league rebounding leader.
Williams (19) and Cadougan (17) also scored in double figures for St. John’s, which finishes its four-game trip tonight in Kitchener against the KW Titans.
Sudbury’s Rayson led all players in the game with 27 points, while JR Holder and Jaylen Brand added 24 for the Five (10-7).
