MONCTON, N.B. — The Cape Breton Eagles suffered a 2-1 overtime loss on the road to the Moncton Wildcats on Saturday, their second straight setback to their division rivals.
Alexander Khovanov scored both goals for the Wildcats, including the winner at 2:50 of the extra frame in front of 4,686 fans at the Avenir Centre. Kyle Havlena replied for the Eagles with his first goal of the season to tie the game up in the third and help earn a point for his team.
In goal, Olivier Rodrigue made 23 saves in the victory. William Grimard suffered the hard-luck loss between the pipes, making 38 stops. He was named the second star of the game.
Cape Breton (12-5-1-0, 25 points) is second to Moncton (14-3-0-0, 28 points) in the Maritime Division standings. The teams met Thursday night at Centre 200, with the Wildcats skating to a 10-4 win. Cape Breton has dropped two straight, while Moncton has won eight games in a row.
The Eagles are back in action Saturday at Centre 200 against the Charlottetown Islanders at 7 p.m. They’ll face the Drummondville Voltigeurs Sunday at 4 p.m. on home ice.
NOTE: Goaltender Kenzie MacPhail of the Cape Breton West Islanders was called up to serve as a backup to Grimard. Kevin Mandolese (lower body) was injured in Thursday’s game against Moncton.
