The Cape Breton Capers 2019-20 season came to an end at the Scotiabank Centre on Friday afternoon.

The fifth-ranked Capers lost the Subway Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball quarter-final 64-59 to the No. 4 seed University of New Brunswick Reds.

A strong second quarter — which saw the Reds outscore the Capers 17-9 — was the difference in the game. Capers outscored their opponents 12-11 in the first quarter and 18-16 in the fourth and final quarter. The teams played to a 20-20 deadlock in the third.

MacKenzee Ryan of the Capers led all scorers with 20 points. Maia Watling added 13 points and Monique Calliste chipped in with 10 points for the Cape Breton University team.

The Reds were led to victory by Mikaela Dodig with 19 points and Eva Tumwine with 17 points.

The Capers went into the playoffs with a 9-11 regular season record while the Varsity Reds were 10-10. CBU lost three of four games to the Reds this season.

Earlier this week, three Capers were singled out for individual accomplishments led by Hailey MacLeod of Marion Bridge who was named AUS rookie of the year.
Her teammates, Ryan, a third-year guard from Glace Bay, was named a first-team all-star, while Calliste was selected as a second-team all-star.

The Red will continue their playoff run today at 1 p.m. against the top-seeded UPEI Panthers. The championship game is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.

In AUS men’s basketball playoff action, the CBU Capers clashed with the UNB Reds Friday evening. The result was not available at press time but is available online at www.capebretonpost.com.
