SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. —

The P.E.I. Wave under-16 team collected the first-ever medal won by a P.E.I. team at the Canadian ringette championships on Saturday morning.

The Wave took home silver after dropping a 5-1 decision to the Calgary Core in the gold-medal match, played before an estimated 1,500-plus noisy fans at Credit Union Place in Summerside. A total of 19 teams competed in the Under-16 Division in the 2019 Credit Union Canadian championships.
A quick start proved key for Calgary, which struck for three goals in the game’s first 5:17. Calgary took a 4-0 advantage into the second half.
Callie Dawes scored a hat trick while Chanelle Smith had a goal and two assists to lead the Core. Kirsten Dempsey also scored.
Sophia Jeffery, assisted by Addie MacPhee and Emily Peters, scored the lone goal for the Wave that drew a thunderous cheer from the pro-P.E.I. crowd.
Rachael McKerracher made 29 saves in recording the goaltending win. Sarah Bain and Kenzy Hawkins shared the goaltending duties for the Wave.
Overall, the Core completed play in the six-day event with an overall record of 7-1 (won-lost). The Wave went 7-3.
