P.E.I. loses final preliminary round games at junior curling events

SHAWINIGAN, QUE. –

 

Newfoundland and Labrador stole one in an extra end Tuesday to hand the Lauren Lenentine rink its first loss of the New Holland Canadian junior womens curling championship.

The Mackenzie Glynn-skipped Newfoundland squad from St. Johns won the contest 7-6 in Shawinigan, Que.

“We fought back hard, but couldn't pull out the win today against Newfoundland,” the team said on its Twitter account Tuesday night.

Glynn scored three in the first before Team P.E.I. scored singles in the second and third. The teams traded singles the next two ends before Lenentine and her team from the Cornwall Curling Club stole one in the sixth to tie the game 4-4.

Newfoundland scored a single in the eight, but P.E.I. responded with a deuce in the ninth. Newfoundland counted one in the 10th to force an extra end.

Newfoundland improved to 4-1 while Team P.E.I., which includes third Kristie Rogers, second Breanne Burgoyne and lead Rachel OConnor, is 5-1.

P.E.I. tied Ontario for top spot in Pool B.

P.E.I. will play the top four teams from Pool A beginning today, but a schedule was unavailable at press time. There are draws at 3 and 7:30 p.m. Atlantic. The top three finishers, based on the combined results from the preliminary and championship round, qualify for the weekend playoffs.

Men

Newfoundland and Labrador counted one in the 10th to defeat Team P.E.I. skipped by Alex MacFadyen Tuesday in the mens competition.

Newfoundland improved to 3-3 while Team P.E.I., from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, is 2-4. The Island squad also consists of lead Parker MacFadyen, second Leslie Noye and third James Dalton.

P.E.I. scored a single in the third and stole one in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Daniel Bruces foursome from Corner Brook scored a deuce in the fifth before MacFadyen scored four in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead.

Newfoundland recorded two in the seventh and stole two more in the eighth before P.E.I. counted one in the ninth to tie it.

P.E.I. will play in the seeding pool.
