P.E.I. athletes win titles at Atlantic gymnastics championships

Four Island clubs represented in Fredericton

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Gymnasts from the four main Island clubs had good showings at the recent Atlantic championships in Fredericton, N.B.
Competing under the Team P.E.I. banner, the Island contingent came back with five all-around first-place finishes and a total of 18 podium placings.

Gymnasts who earned the right to call themselves Atlantic champion were Bailey Burke (Level 5 Novice), Shailynn Richards (Level 7 Open), Isaac Landry (Level 3 Under-13), Gabriel Ing (Level 4 Under-13) and Oliver Wilson (Elite 3).
In addition to the all-around titles, Team P.E.I. also had a number of gold-medal performances on individual apparatus, including Eve Morris (Level 5 Tyro, floor), Bailey Burke (Level 5 Novice, beam and floor), Meredith Morgan (Level 5 Novice, uneven bars), Jayda McMahon (Level 6 Tyro, vault), Jessee Hill (Level 6 Novice, vault), Lexis Scharman (Level 6 Open, beam and floor), Ciara Chaisson (Level 7 Tyro, Floor), Shailynn Richards (Level 7 Open, vault and beam), Emma King (Level 8 Tyro, floor), and Lilly Coughlin (Level 8 Novice, floor).

On the boys’ side, event first-place performances were recorded by Josh Hammill (Level 4 Under-13, floor and rings), Gabriel Ing (Level 4 Under-13, pommel horse, parallel bars, vault and high bar), Oliver Wilson (Elite 3, floor and vault), and Ryan Dwyer (Elite 3 rings, pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar).
The competitive season continues this weekend with the Eastern Canadian championships being hosted by the Summerside Saultos at Credit Union Place. Action begins today, Friday, and runs through Saturday.
The final event of the competitive season will be the national championships in Ottawa, Ont., from May 21 to 26. P.E.I. will have a total of seven gymnasts competing at the nationals.
