Brooke Henderson began the Women’s British Open with a three-under par 69 Thursday at Woburn Golf Club in England.

The Canadian star finished her day strong, with birdies at the hole Nos. 15 and 16, to close the gap with current leader Ashleigh Buhai of South Africa, who shot a seven-under 65.

The only bogey on Henderson’s card came at the par-3 sixth hole.

Henderson has won twice this season and entered the season’s final major only behind double-major winner Jin Young Ko in the season-long Race to CME Globe standings.

The Women’s British Open is the only major where Henderson has yet to finish inside the top 10, with her best finish coming last year when she tied for 11th.

In three weeks, the Canadian star will defend her title at the CP Women’s Open, this year held at Magna Golf Club north of Toronto.
