CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Boxing Day pace was full of gifts courtesy of Jetta Flys and driver Corey MacPherson Tuesday afternoon at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
MacPherson set up shop on the front end in the $1,800 event with Jetta Flys at 4-1 odds and landed on the line first in 2:00.1 as one of two wins on the day for the teamster. Jetster (Marc Campbell) finished second with Zingers Laugh (Walter Cheverie) completing the healthy $959.35 triactor ticket.
Jetta Flys is co-owned and trained by Stephen Quinn of Stratford with co-owner John Quinn of Charlottetown.
Campbell, Red Shore’s leading driver, continued his winning ways during the 16-dash card with three visits to the winner's circle. The 'King' of Island racing, Campbell captured the $2,400 preferred pace with Rose Run Quest out of his own stable for owner Blair Hansen of Charlottetown. Time of the mile was 1:57.4 as Rose Run Quest won his third straight preferred pace. Second went to Czar Seelster (Todd Weatherbee) with Woggy Rocks (Gary Chappell) finishing third.
Campbell's other wins came with newcomer Diduseethat in 2:02.2, also from his own barn for the training double, along with Howmacs Dragonator in 2:02.4 for trainer Earl Watts of Hampshire, while Painted Pony teamed up with Campbell to win in 2:00.2 for trainer Raymond White of Murray River.
The day put Campbell at a record 156 wins at the Charlottetown Driving Park for 2017 with one program left in the calendar year.
Holy Molie Maggie overpowered the top trot of the day with a 2:04.2 victory for Cheverie and trainer Jeff Holmes. The $1,600 class saw Hop Up (MacPherson) continue her top-two streak with a second-place finish, and Suicide Shift (Patrick Shepherd) finished third.
Jason Hughes also had a driving double on the program, while Watts had two training victories.
Live racing continues Sunday evening for a special New Year's Eve program at the capital oval with a 6:30 p.m. scheduled post time.
