HUNTER RIVER, P.E.I. — Two Summerside United teams brought home silver medals from the Central Queens soccer tournament over the weekend
The United under-13 and under-15 girls’ Premier Division teams both advanced to their respective championship games, where they dropped close decisions.
In under-15 play, the United completed tournament play with an overall record of 2-1-1 (won-lost-tied).
“I thought the girls played extremely well all weekend,” said Summerside coach Wade Smith. “We moved the ball really well.”
The final against RC United was as close as it could be. The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time and there was no scoring in two five-minute overtime periods, setting the stage for penalty kicks. RC United eventually prevailed in the sixth round of penalty kicks to pull out the 2-1 victory.
Jill Lockerby scored Summerside’s goal in regulation time.
“It is always tough to lose in a shootout, but RC played very good,” added Smith.
Brooke Blanchard and Brooke-Lynn Gallant scored while Maddy MacPherson, who tended goal in all tournament games for the United, recorded her first of back-to-back shutouts in a 2-0 win over the Winsloe/Charlottetown Royals in the opening game of the round robin.
Gracie Gallant (2), Brooke-Lynn Gallant and Aaliyah MacDonald provided Summerside’s goals in a 4-0 victory over Stratford in Game 2.
Summerside and RC United played to a 1-1 tie to close out the round robin. Callie McAlduff scored Summerside’s goal.
Under-13
In under-13 play, Summerside went 1-0-2 to complete round-robin play in third-place overall. The United then pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Eliot River Ramblers in the semifinals, before dropping a 2-0 decision to the Winsloe/Charlottetown Royals.
“The girls played really well all weekend battling through the heat and several injuries,” assessed Summerside coach Jeff Brant. “I don't think anyone expected us to be in the gold-medal match.
“We've had a tough season with our record not reflecting what we are capable of, but the girls played well-structured soccer all weekend, moved the ball, generated opportunities and Sydney Cormier was a rock in goal every game.”
The United opened round-robin play with a 2-2 tie against Bedford Team One. Katie-Grace Noye and Kailyn Gallant scored for Summerside.
Goals from Gallant, Brooke Doucet and Abby Peters, along with Cormier’s shutout, sent Summerside to a 3-0 victory over Bedford Team Two.
The United and Sherwood-Parkdale Rangers played to a scoreless draw to close out the round robin.
In the semifinals, Doucet scored twice to lift Summerside to a 2-1 win over the Ramblers.
