CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – Summerside badminton players Emma Hughes and Matt Barlow are the Holland College Hurricanes athletes of the week.
Hughes and Barlow qualified to represent the Hurricanes and the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championships in Edmonton from Feb. 28-March 3.
Hughes, a second-year player with the Hurricanes who is studying in the pastry arts program, went 3-0 Sunday to earn her spot at nationals in the women’s singles category. She defeated players from the University of King’s College Blue Devils, Mount Allison Mounties and Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons, losing only a single set along the way.
She led the ‘Canes to a third-place finish Saturday in the ACAA championship when she finished in second in the women’s singles category with a 2-1 record.
She attended the CCAA nationals last year in the women’s doubles category with Kristyn Visser.
Barlow, a first-year player for the ‘Canes who is studying in business administration, went 4-0 on Sunday to qualify for nationals in the men’s singles competition. He lost only two sets while beating a Dragon, a Blue Devil, a Mountie and a Dal AC Ram.
