The team announced Tuesday it had released centre Leon Gibson and signed Da’Quan Cook.

Head coach and vice-president of player personnel Joe Salerno said the team had high expectations for Gibson, who had played for the University of Houston Cougars.

“He just didn't seem to be fitting the style we wanted to play and I didn't think we were quite getting the amount of output that we were hoping for when we signed him,” Salerno said.

In eight games, which included six starts, Gibson averaged nine points on .474 shooting from the field while averaging 7.3 rebounds.

Cook comes to Charlottetown after leaving a squad in the Middle East. He played with the Niagara River Lions in 2015-16, averaging 13.8 points and seven rebounds.

The six-foot-nine, 230-pound Elizabeth, N.J., native can play both the four and five spots for the Storm, who had interest in here during the off-season.

“He’s a skilled guy,” Salerno said. “He’s a guy that can score from 17 feet out, put the ball on the floor (and) he has a back-to-the basket game as well.”

Salerno said the team has received good output from its backcourt during the first eight games of the National Basketball League of Canada season, but was looking for more help inside to go with Tirrell Baines.

“I really thought we needed to add another potential inside scoring threat,” Salerno said.

The Storm made a slew of moves last season as it tried to improve the roster. Salerno said this year is different.

“Guys like Nick Okorie, Al Stewart, Terry Thomas, Tirrell Baines, Al Richter, they’re not going to be going anywhere.”

Cook arrived in Charlottetown Monday night and is expected to play Friday when the team plays the River Lions in St. Catharines, Ont.

The Storm (4-4) is waiting to hear back from Terry Thomas’ x-rays, but Salerno said the guard from Halifax was feeling better on Tuesday. He received an eye injury on Thursday during play in Halifax.
