CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The finalists for Sport P.E.I.’s intercollegiate female athlete of the year have a propensity for winning.

Rugby’s Alysha Corrigan, sprinter Bailey Smith and wrestler Hannah Taylor have represented Prince Edward Island well across the country and beyond.

The winner will be announced Tuesday during the 45th annual awards night at Holland College’s Florence Simmons Performance Hall. Tickets for the event are $25 and are available by calling Sport P.E.I. at 902-368-4110 by today.

Here are excerpts of the three finalists’ bios:

Alysha Corrigan
Rugby, Acadia

During her fifth and final year of eligibility, Alysha Corrigan joined Acadia University and produced her most dominant season. Corrigan finished second in league scoring with 51 points while helping lead the Axewomen to second place in the Atlantic University Sport.

Corrigan’s accolades continued capturing a silver medal with the P.E.I. Abbies at the Atlantic championships. She went on to score two tries and kicked three conversions to lead the Nova Scotia Keltics to a silver medal at the Canadian Rugby Championships.

Topping it all off, the Charlottetown native and UPEI graduate was selected as one of the top 31 players in the country to attend the most recent Rugby Canada Fall International tour.

The AUS all-star and U Sports second team all-Canadian continues to improve year in and year out.

Bailey Smith
Track and field, UPEI

In 2018, the UPEI track program was just in its second year of operations when sophomore Bailey Smith captured her second AUS 60-metre title.
Smith’s season began with solid showings in Moncton and Oromocto, N.B., but it was at the AUS Championships where the nursing student from Mount Stewart smashed her personal best to win gold. The accomplishment was recognized by the AUS when she was named the 2018 track athlete of the year.
At the U Sports championships in Windsor, Ont., Smith tied her personal best, placing her seventh in the country and capping off a remarkable season.

Hannah Taylor
Wresting, Brock University

Hannah Taylor is no stranger to standing on the podium.
In 2018, the Brock University Badger finished in the top three in every U Sport event she entered. Making this achievement even more impressive is the fact Hannah competes in the 57-kg class, one of the most competitive divisions.
Breaking down her medal count, the Cornwall resident won gold in Ryerson and Guelph, silver at Simon Fraser and Brock, and bronze at York. At the Ontario University Association Championship, she not only gold, but was named the most outstanding female wrestler.
She capped off her season by winning the U Sport national championship for the second year in a row.
