CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — One of the greatest three-year-olds in the history of Atlantic Canadian harness racing made his four-year-old debut on the East Coast look easy Saturday at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Sock It Away went off as the heavy favourite in the Race 11 preferred pace and driver Corey MacPherson controlled every fraction in the $2,800 event. Sock It Away left well off the rail to secure the early lead and laid down splits of 28.2, 59.1 and 1:29.2 en route to a 1:57.3 score over an off track.
Second went to Rollwithitharry (Gilles Barrieau) while Rockin Indy (David Dowling) completed the triactor. Kevin MacLean trains Sock It Away for owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford.
Midnight Matt used first-over tactics to capture the $2,500 back-up pace with a 2:00.1 victory with Jason Hughes in the race bike for owner-trainer Jennifer Doyle of Vernon Bridge.
Trainer Jackie Matheson scored a pair of wins from his Charlottetown stable on the evening with Lincoln Seelster winning in 2:00.1 with MacPherson at the lines then Perfect Escape (Barrieau) closed out the program in 1:59.3.
Live racing in Charlottetown takes a hiatus until Thursday, July 18, as Governor’s Plate Week racing starts today and culminates in the Governor’s Plate, presented by Township Chevrolet and Noonan Petroleum, on Saturday, July 13.
