SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — It was a two-win day for P.E.I. at the 2019 Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Monday
The Suzanne Birt-skipped rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex improved to 3-1 (won-lost) after wins of 8-6 over Team Canada’s Jennifer Jones (2-2) and 8-4 against the Yukon’s Nicole Baldwin (0-4) at Centre 200 in Sydney, N.S.

The 16 teams competing in the Canadian women’s curling championship are divided into two 16-team pools. The top four in each pool will qualify for the championship round that begins Thursday.
Birt, third stone Marie Christianson, second stone Meaghan Hughes and lead Michelle McQuaid enter Tuesday’s play in a three-way tie for first place in Pool B with Kerry Gallusha of the Northwest Territories and Casey Scheidegger’s wild-card team from Alberta.
The P.E.I. representative, coached by Mitchell O’Shea, has one game scheduled for Tuesday against New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford (2-2) at 2:30 p.m.
Against the Yukon, P.E.I. trailed 3-1 after four ends, but counted three in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead into the break. Team Birt then stole a deuce in the sixth end and a single in the seventh to open up a 7-3 cushion.

Islanders
Summerside native Erin Carmody is playing third stone for the Jill Brothers-skipped Nova Scotia rink, which lost 9-4 to Manitoba’s Tracy Fleury (2-2) on Monday to drop to 0-4. Tuesday, Nova Scotia plays Quebec’s Gabrielle Lavoie (0-4) at 9:30 a.m., and Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville (2-2) at 7:30 p.m.

Alison Griffin, who has connections to West Prince, is the third stone for Nunavut’s Jenine Bodner (1-3). Nunavut also plays twice Tuesday – against Alberta’s Chelsea Carey (4-0) at 9:30 a.m., and Manitoba at 7:30 p.m.
