CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — An idea to reconnect with some of the players who laid the foundation for the Hunter’s Ale House Mudmen has thrived.

The Old Boys played a handful of games last year and are now entrenched as a big part of the Mudmen family.

Mudmen president Phil Gallant said the whole concept was to bring some players who were away from the team for a few years back while connecting people through the sport.

“We’re a club, not a team,” he said proudly.

That pride was on full display as the Mudmen division one and two teams swept the Maritime championships in mid-October at UPEI.

“One of the best moments was that we had all those guys who paved the way for us there to celebrate with us,” Gallant said.

The Old Boys will play their first game of the season today at 5 p.m. at Co-op Field in Charlottetown against the Young Guys, a collection of high school all-stars. Next weekend they are heading to Halifax to play the Nova Scotia Keltics alumni.

“The best part of it is they just feel so connected and apart of the club,” Gallant said. “This has blossomed so much for our club we have other teams across the Maritimes that are trying to do the same thing as us.”

The game is essentially the same with some modifications to stoppages and substitutions to allow players to play as much as they can.

Gallant said they are hoping anyone interested in joining comes out today to watch or gets in touch for more information.
