LANGLEY, B.C. — The Holland College Hurricanes went 1-2 at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball championship in Langley, B.C.
After defeating the host Langara Falcons 120-77 Thursday, the ’Canes dropped the semifinal 107-96 to the Sheridan Bruins Friday and the bronze semifinal 106-97 to the Humber Hawks on Saturday.
The Hawks were hot from downtown, going 11-for-21 (52.4 per cent) from three-point territory while the Hurricanes went 5-for-22 (22.7 per cent).
Holland College guard Jordan Holness had a game-high 27 points, making hay at the free-throw line – going 17-for-22. He also had six steals, two rebounds and two assists.
Jace Colley, the national player of the year who has committed to Chicago State University next season, had 20 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. In his final game as a Hurricane, Roosevelt (Chicken) Whyley had 15 points and seven rebounds while Travis Adams contributed 20 points off the bench.
The Hawks held 24-21, 48-41 and 80-72 quarter leads. Humber defeated Montmorency in the bronze medal game.
The Bruins led the Hurricanes 28-24 after the first quarter, but Holland College took a 52-46 lead into halftime. The Bruins tied it at 73 heading to the fourth and outscored the Hurricanes 34-23 in the final 10 minutes.
Sheridan shot better from three-point territory (35 per cent to 26) and the free-throw line (74 per cent to 56). Adams led the Hurricanes with 28 points off the bench while Martin Campbell and Whyley each had 20 points.
Sheridan lost the final 85-82 to the Vancouver Island University Mariners.
