CORNWALL – Two Kings County teams swept the P.E.I. School Athletic Association senior A soccer championships at the Terry Fox Sports Complex on Saturday.

The top-seeded Montague Vikings shut out the third-seeded Morell Marlins 4-0 in the girls’ gold-medal game. Morell pulled out a 2-1 decision over the Souris Spartans in the boys’ championship.

Girls
The girls’ final was a well-played game by both games.
Montague’s Braylan MacEachern opened the scoring in the 23rd minute to take the lead, and a goal off the foot of Lacey White in the 42nd minute made it a 2-0 game at halftime.
Morell pressed offensively in an attempt to get back in the game in the second half, but Krista Kovenberg of Montague capitalized to make it 3-0. White scored her second goal of the game four minutes later to close out the scoring.
Maddie Cooper recorded the shutout. Emily Sanderson was Morell’s keeper.

The Morell Marlins edged Souris 2-1 in the P.E.I. School Athletic Association Senior A Boys Soccer League championship game at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall on Saturday.

Boys
In a very entertaining boys’ championship, which featured back-and-forth play for all 90 minutes, third-seeded Morell pulled out a one-goal victory over the No. 1-seeded Spartans.
Morell’s Jesse McGrath beat Souris keeper Jacob MacPhee in the 24th minute to open the scoring. Both teams pushed for goals for the rest of the half, but to no avail.
Souris came out fast in the second half, and were rewarded early as Ben MacIsaac beat Morell keeper Nic Studzinski in the 47th minute.
The teams continued to play an aggressive and skilled game, and Thomas Craig made some nifty moves around a couple of Souris defenders and tucked a nice low shot to the left side of the net for what proved to be the eventual winning goal in the 72nd minute.

Bronze medals
In the bronze-medal games, the Kensington Torchettes edged the Charlottetown Rural Team Two Raiders 1-0 while the Team Two Raiders defeated the Kensington Torchmen 4-0.
Emma Arsenault’s goal at the eight-minute mark of the first half was all the offence Torchettes keeper Kylie MacLellan would require.
Jamie MacAulay handled the keeping duties for Rural.
Owen Matheson’s goal four minutes into the game got the Rural boys off to a quick start against the Torchmen. The score remained 1-0 until Rural struck for three goals in the game’s final 10 minutes to put the game out of reach.
Joe Crisostomo (80th minute), Matheson (81st minute) and Owen Arnette (90th minute) netted the late goals for Rural.
