Massey dominant as Highlanders defeat Storm by one point

SYDNEY, N.S. – Bruce Massey had 34 points, 11 rebounds, five steals and four assists as the Cape Breton Highlanders squeaked by the Island Storm 101-100 Sunday in National Basketball League of Canada play.

Jamal Reynolds added 26 points and nine rebounds off the bench while George Williams chipped in 19 points for the home side in the win.

Russell Byrd had 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to lead the Storm while Kareem Canty had 13 points, 10 assists, four rebounds and two steals. Both had a block.

Sampson Carter had 18 points and nine rebounds while Tirrell Baines scored 17 and Robbie Robinson 10 off the bench.

The Storm led 35-32 after the first quarter and 57-56 at the half but trailed 80-77 heading to the fourth.

The Storm had a better field-goal percentage (47.5 to 38.6) but took eight fewer shots. Cape Breton hit one more trey in one more attempt and scored eight more points at the free-throw line while getting 11 more opportunities from the charity stripe.

The Storm blocked seven shots compared to the Highlanders three, but the home side stole the ball 15 times from the Storm compared to the visitors seven.

Cape Breton improved to 11-6 while the Storm lost its 10th straight is to fall to 2-11.
