CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Brett Butler had 28 kills Sunday as the Holland College Hurricanes won their second Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) men’s volleyball banner in the program’s history.
Marcus Lapointe had 19 digs to lead the defence as the third-seeded ’Canes knocked off the top-ranked St. Thomas Tommies 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 27-25) on home court in front of a loud and rowdy crowd. The Hurricanes first conference crown came in 2017.
Christian Christie had 19 kills and Evan VanBuskirk 18 digs for the Tommies.
Butler and Ryan Dickson for the Tommies were the players of the game.
The Hurricanes will represent the ACAA at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championship. They will be hosted by the Red Deer Kings in Red Deer, Alta., from March 6-9.
Women’s
The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics dynasty continued Sunday, winning their eighth straight conference title.
The Mystics defeated the host Holland College Hurricanes 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21).
Madison Urquhart had 16 kills and Kenzie Brimicombe 14 digs to pace the Mystics while the Hurricanes were led by Jasmine Smith with 10 kills and Katie Wood’s 11 digs.
Janine Marshall for the Mystics and Wood were the players of the game.
The Mystics will head to Welland, Ont., for the nationals at Niagara College from March 7-9.
