HALIFAX – The Holland Hurricanes have put themselves in a position to go into the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men’s soccer national championship as Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) champions.
The Hurricanes will face the St. Thomas Tommies in Sunday’s conference championship game. The Hurricanes are hosting the CCAA nationals at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall from Nov. 6 to 10.
The Hurricanes, who are the defending ACAA champions, advanced to the final with a 6-0 victory over the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics in one of two semifinals played at the Mainland Commons on Saturday. The Tommies edged the University King’s Blue Devils 1-0 in the other semifinal.
Shunya Kobayashi scored a hat trick to lead the Hurricanes, who received two goals from Tegan Misener and a single tally from Alex Lourenso.
Holland College led 3-0 at halftime.
Eric Prior’s unassisted goal in the 70th minute lifted the Tommies to victory in their semifinal.
Women
The women’s final may not feature a P.E.I. team on Sunday, but will include two players from Prince County on opposing teams.
Phoebe van der Meulen of Summerside plays midfield for the St. Thomas Tommies, who will be opposed by Mount Saint Vincent. Prince Edward Islanders on the Mystics are midfielders Hannah Oatway of Kensington Jasmine Tang of Cornwall.
The Mystics defeated the Hurricanes 3-1 in one semifinal, and St. Thomas edged the UNBSJ Sea Wolves 3-2 in the other.
Jessica Oliver (2) and Breagh Laing scored first-half goals for MSVU. Nicole Fergusson replied for the Hurricanes in the 75th minute.
Silvia Fullerton, Robyn MacPhail and Katie MacDermaid scored for St. Thomas. Karlee Duvan netted both UNBSJ games.
