CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Controlling the fractions for every step of the mile, Gettin Messi became the fastest trotter in the history of the Atlantic Sires Stakes on Tuesday evening at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Mike McGuigan was in the bike behind the Len McGuigan-trainee in his $6,120 Atlantic Sires Stakes three-year-old trot assignment, sponsored by Meridian Farms and the P.E.I. Harness Racing Industry Association. The Jamie Whalen-owned son of Armbro Barrister carved out an easy first half with fractions of 30.1 and 1:00.1 before turning in three-quarters of 1:29.4 and kicking home in 29 flat for a three-quarter-length decision in 1:58.4.
Former Atlantic Sires Stakes record holder Ya Boy Bear (Marc Campbell) finished second while race favourite Mile Hill Willie (Gilles Barrieau) was third.
The other $6,120 Atlantic Sires Stakes sophomore trot splits were won by Thelastonestanding (Brian MacPhee) in 1:59.4 and Dusty Lane Titan (Campbell) in 2:00.4.
Mabou Ridge went down to the first defeat of his career in the lone $15,520 Atlantic Sires Stakes two-year-old trot division. Tequila Tuesday left well from the start in the rookie division, set up shop on the front end and fought off all challengers. Myles Heffernan Sr. was at the lines of Tequila Tuesday as he won over a late-charging Mabou Ridge (Clare MacDonald), who finished second, while third went to Go With Her (Kuri White).
