CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – There’s a new kid in town as former Canadian Olympic team swimming coach Pierre Lafontaine moves into the provincial high-performance coach position for Swim P.E.I.

Lafontaine was the chief executive officer (CEO) and head coach of Swimming Canada for more than eight years, coaching the national team at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, at numerous world championships and at the Commonwealth and Pan-Am Games. He was most recently the CEO of Cross Country Canada and Cycling Canada.

His career spans more than three decades working with swimmers, cyclists and cross-country skiers in Australia, the United States and Canada. He was also the CEO of Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

A news release from Swim P.E.I. said Lafontaine will help develop and implement a performance plan for the organization, work with supporting clubs to elevate the performances of swimmers in P.E.I. and to create opportunities for athletes to remain in the province and train to their highest potential.
