CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — New names will be implemented next season for hockey age groups across Canada .
Hockey Canada is removing longstanding names like midget, bantam, peewee and atom in favour of names reflecting the participants age like under-18. The change was passed at its winter congress during the weekend.
“We believe everyone should feel welcome in the game and in our ongoing effort to make hockey more inclusive, the members at the Hockey Canada annual meeting determined that the names of our age divisions will change,” said Michael Brind’Amour, chairman of the Hockey Canada’s board of directors. “Following a comprehensive review, we believe this change will simplify the system for families who may be new to the game. The new age division names will be implemented for next season.”
