KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — The standings just got a lot tighter at the 2019 Don Johnson Memorial Cup.
New Brunswick’s Moncton Vitos, behind Jamel Nelson’s 39-save shutout, topped the Sackville Blazers from Nova Scotia 2-0 in an early-afternoon game Thursday that left both teams, along with the host Kensington Vipers, with identical records of 1-1 (won-lost).
The Vipers and Blazers meet in a huge game at Credit Union Centre in Kensington that features huge playoff implications on Thursday at 8 p.m.
The top four teams advance to Saturday’s semifinal games at 3 and 7 p.m. The championship game of the five-team tournament is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
Remi Theriault’s unassisted power-play goal with 12:01 left in the second period was all the offence Nelson would require. Brock McEwen added an insurance goal with 1:53 remaining in the third period.
Sackville goaltender Justin Sumarah turned aside 32 of 34 shots.
Two minor penalties were called against the Blazers while Moncton received one minor.
