Women's hockey Panthers pick up 5-1 road win in Sackville, N.B.

SACKVILLE, N.B. — Captain Rachel Colle’s goal 41 seconds into the third period was the winner Wednesday as the UPEI Panthers defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 5-2 in Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey action.

Taylor Gillis, Kaylee Dufresne, Jolena Gillard on the power play and Faith Steeves into the empty net also scored in the road win for the Panthers. Sophie Vandale had two assists while singles went to Kristen MacIntyre, Mireille Martin, Maria Clinton and Jenna Pellerin.

Mermaid's Maddy Koughan and Lauren Shaw scored for the Mounties with Emma Schurman recording the lone assist.

Camille Scherger stopped 21 shots for the victory while Bianca Zak stopped 34 shots in the loss. UPEI was 1-for-5 on the power play and killed bother of Mount Allison’s chances with the man advantage. UPEI held 1-0 and 2-1 period leads.

The Panthers improved to 10-2-1 while the Mounties are 2-10-1.

UPEI hosts the first-place Saint Mary’s Huskies (10-2-1) Sunday at 3 p.m. The Panthers moved up one spot to eighth in the U Sports top-10 rankings released Wednesday while the Huskies moved from five to three.
