Western Capitals start off busy stretch on winning note at home

SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals opened a busy 72 hours on a winning note.

The Capitals doubled the Grand Falls Rapids 4-2 on Thursday night and are in Nova Scotia for back-to-back games this weekend. The Caps take a Maritime Junior Hockey League-leading record of 27-5-1 (won-lost-overtime losses) into Bridgewater on Friday to take on the South Shore Lumberjacks (17-13-3) and move on to face the Eastlink South Division-leading Yarmouth Mariners (21-10-3) on Saturday.
Before 892 fans at Eastlink Arena, veteran linemates Kallum Muirhead and Brodie MacArthur each registered three points to lead the Caps. Muirhead had two goals and an assist while MacArthur collected three helpers.
Cam Roberts and Marc Richard, with the game-winning goal at 19:21 of the third period, also scored for the Caps, who took a 3-2 advantage into the second intermission after a scoreless opening frame. Zach Biggar, Jacob Arsenault and Josh MacDonald added single assists.
Lucas Joly and Adam Fowlow replied for the Rapids (12-19-3).
The Capitals held a huge advantage in the shots-on-goal department – 51-23. That included period advantages of 17-7, 17-11 and 17-5. Dominik Tmej was the winning goaltender and Tyriq Outen held the Rapids in the game.
Referees Nolan Cornish and Jarod MacAdam had a quiet night as they assessed only five minor penalties – three of those against Grand Falls.
The Caps were 1-for-3 on the power play while the Grand Falls went 0-for-2.
The game’s three stars were:
1. Kallum Muirhead (Caps), 2. Brodie MacArthur (Caps), 3. Tyriq Outen (Rapids).
The Caps’ next home game is on Thursday, Jan. 16, against the Edmundston Blizzard (21-7-5).
