Western Capitals drop pre-season opener to Crushers

NEW GLASGOW, N.S. — The Pictou County Crushers scored four third-period goals en route to a 7-4 victory over the Summerside Western Capitals at the Pictou County Wellness Centre on Sunday night. 

It marked the first pre-season action for both Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) teams.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the opening period and 3-3 following 40 minutes.

James Harrison (2-1), Jaden Mason (2), Dave Mathews (2) and Kevin Mason scored for the Crushers.

Jesse Blanchard (2), Landon Clow and Alex Graham replied for the Capitals. Single assists were credited to Chris McQuaid, Will Proude, Theo Citrullo, Will Smith, Sid McNeill and Nick Reeves.

Overall, the Crushers held a 33-31 shots-on-goal advantage. 

Zach Nauss, who stopped 15 of 16 shots, and Bryson Uberol (12/15) shared the goaltending duties for Pictou County. Cruz Loughlin went the distance between the pipes for the Caps.

The Caps’ next pre-season action is Friday in Amherst, N.S., against the Ramblers and back home at Credit Union Place on Saturday against the Crushers. Both games are 7 p.m. starts.
