YARMOUTH, N.S. — The Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals made it a clean sweep Saturday night.
The Capitals defeated the Yarmouth Mariners 5-3 for their third win in three days to improve their Maritime Junior Hockey League-leading record to 29-5-1 (won-lost-overtime losses). The Caps started off the busy stretch with a 4-2 home-ice win over the Grand Falls Rapids (12-19-3) on Thursday night and then built an early lead and then held off a late rally by the South Shore Lumberjacks in a 6-5 win Friday night.
The Caps have won five straight and six of their last seven.
Summerside’s next game is at Eastlink Arena on Thursday against the Edmundston Blizzard (22-7-5) at 7 p.m. This game will feature not only the top two teams in the Eastlink North Division but also the top two clubs in the 12-team league’s overall standings.
Winning goal
Before 1,457 fans at the Mariners Centre, Brodie MacArthur’s goal at 11:36 of the third period broke a 3-3 tie and proved to be the game-winner. Marc Richard added an empty-net goal with 34 seconds remaining.
MacArthur, who leads the MHL in scoring with 74 points in 35 regular-season games, also added three assists for a four-point night. Zach Biggar, Marc-Andre LeCouffe and Riley MacDougall also lit the lamp for the Capitals.
Brodie MacMillan, Kallum Muirhead, Cam Roberts, Josh MacDonald, affiliated player Ryan Richards and Nick Reeves chipped in with assists.
Ian MacDonald and Kurtis Lang countered for the Eastlink South Division-leading Mariners (22-11-3).
The Mariners led 1-0 after the first period and the teams went into the second intermission tied 2-2.
Dominik Tmej picked up the goaltending win and Justin Sumarah was between the pipes for Yarmouth. Summerside held a 35-27 shots-on-goal advantage.
The Caps were 0-for-2 on the power play while the Mariners had a 1-for-3 summary.
The game’s three stars were:
